Incorporated under the laws of Dakota, certificate no. 18, issued to Laura Browning for 500 shares on June 5, 1886. Signed by Robert W. Cooper as President and Edward K. DePuy as Secretary. Vignette of a mountain scene with two stamp mills operating on either side of a road, complete with lines to transport ore into the mills, located near center top. Black ornate border and print with bright silver colored embossed seal at lower left. Datelined Deadwood, Dakota. Uncancelled. Measures 10 x 8". The company's namesake was probably General George Crook, a US Cavalry officer who distinguished himself in several campaigns against Indians. One such campaign took place in the Black Hills, in the Great Sioux War of 1876-77, where he fought against the Lakota at the Battle of the Rosebud (Ref: arlingtoncemetary.net). Slight smudge in upper left corner, two pinholes along right edge, two vertical creaselines, otherwise very fine.
