American politician (1769-1828) who served as senator and who, as governor of New York, played a major role in the construction of the Erie Canal. ALS, one page, 7 x 8.75, January 8, 1807. In part: “I have the honor to receive a communication from you informing me of my election as a member of the Society…I beg you to inform the society that I accept it with pleasure and to tender them my most respectful acknowledgements.” Clinton has crossed out several words in the first paragraph. Intersecting folds, areas of soiling, a block of toning along the left side and two small holes not affecting text, otherwise fine condition.
