Day’s patent Truncheon pistol constructed of brass with eagle head and under hammer percussion mechanism showing bell mouth cannon type muzzle. The pistol measures 15-1/2” overall with 8” barrel portion whichis approx 1-1/4” across with slightly under 1” bore. The rear of the barrel shows two screwed in plaques on each side that read “Day’s Patent”. The hammer and trigger are numbered “85” and there is a cocking ring onthe hammer which is of the period. The gun is in very good condition showing a light patina, some minor rust on mechanism and screws but well detailed and not rubbed out. An absolutely original example which several old articles and dealer advertisements indicate these were made for the Philadelphia mint as weapons for the guards (we have never seen documentation to this as a fact, only speculation). From an old New Yorkcollector’s estate. Est.;$3,000-$6,000.
