Dawn Redwood Fossilized Pine Cones Cretaceous Era
For your consideration are twenty, Dawn Redwood fossilized pine cones found in the Hell Creek area from the Late Cretaceous Period (65 Million Years ago). Dawn Redwoods were widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, encompassing North America, Greenland, and Europe, between 65 and 100 million years ago, according to fossil records. They still exist today, although the World Conservation Union has classed them as "critically endangered" due to human encroachment. The genus Metasequoia was thought to be extinct until 1941, when a live population was discovered in China. This makes the dawn redwood an excellent example of a living fossil. These pine cones are Cretaceous in age and were most likely obtained from an iron-rich outcrop in the Hell Creek Formation, which explains their dark orange-red color. They show a great pinecone shape and the ridges are well defined. They show good condition overall with no signs of damage noted. They measure from 3/4" L x 5/8" W x 1" H to 1 1/8" L x 1 1/8" W x 1 1/8" H. They have a collective weight of 362.9 grams.*
