Davitt, Michael (1846-1906) An Autograph Letter Signed "Michael" to Power (John O'Connor) concerning a meeting (in all likelihood the famous Irishtown meeting of April 20, 1879). 8vo, 3 pp. A highly important letter outlining the events of a meeting attended by Davitt, James Daly (editor of the Connaught Telegraph) and others. Davitt mentions the meeting was a success and placards were issued "Hurrah for Parnell and Power...Nationalists assemble to resent the last scandalous insult offered to the people and their leaders" a statement referring to the exorbitant rent rates exacted by Canon Ulick Bourke. Davitt continues "Bourke sent for me on Saturday evening + begged that I would prevent any attack upon his grace. I made him consent to an alteration in the resolutions...". He also adds that Daly told Bourke "that a plot was hatching to oppose you [Power] in the upcoming election. I had to interfere + plainly hinted that neither Bourke or ourself were to use this agitation for any purpose foreign to the object for which it started". Davitt also mentions a club to be formed (possibly the National Land League of Mayo). A historically important letter regarding the land rights of 19th century Irish tenants. Small chip to letter affecting one letter, else very good. Framed with a later printed image of Davitt. 6.5" x 4" - 16.5 x 10.2 cm. Est. $2000/3000 Est. $2000/3000
