American physician turned US Air Force lieutenant colonel (1922–2010) who, as part of Project Manhigh, set a record of high-altitude balloon flight in 1957 at 19 miles above the Earth in an aluminum capsule. Two signed photos: a glossy 10.25 x 8 of Simons inside his gondola as it rises to a record height of more than 100,000 feet, signed in black ballpoint, "Highest Regards, David G. Simons," near collector's ink notations; and a matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of Simons's balloon ready to take off from the bottom of an open-pit iron mine near Crosby, Minnesota, signed in fountain pen, "Launch 0925 CDT 19 Aug 1957, Landing 1435 CDT 20 Aug 1957, >100,000´, Crosby Minn to Frederick S.D., David G. Simons, Mjr," with the reverse bearing a Wide World Photos stamp. In overall fine condition, with some creasing to the matte-finish photo. Accompanied by a transmittal letter from Simons's secretary, dated September 16, 1957, addressed to noted collector Cornelius Greenway.
