David Niven Signed Letter. Six-page letter, dated
David Niven Signed Letter. Six-page letter, dated October 4, 1945, handwritten by the legendary actor and addressed to "Irving." It reads in part: "Well, I am now once more a civilian and after over six years of Active Service believe me I am thoroughly satisfied with my blue suit and felt hat! It has been a long haul since I last saw you, and I just have to thank God for letting me come through O.K. without a scratch. All I want to do now is to draw a heavy veil over the years since 1939 and forget I ever left Hollywood. I have missed the life the interest and above all my friends of the Industry so terribly during all this time...I hope Mr. G[oldwyn] will give me back my old dressing room -- No 5." Before he came to Hollywood, London-born actor Niven spent several years commissioned in the Highland Light Infantry. At the outbreak of WWII, he felt an obligation to return to the service and joined the Rifle Brigade, a Light Infantry Regiment in the British Army. By the end of the war he had worked his way up to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the British Commandos and was made a Legionnaire of the Order of Merit (the highest American order that can be earned by a non-citizen) by General Eisenhower. The letter is lightly creased with a one-inch separation at the upper margin of first page, a nick at the upper edge of the fifth page, and tape remnants on the first and fifth pages. Overall, in fine condition. With COA from PSA/DNA.
