Featured in this lot we have a limited edition David Manuel bronze sculpture of Chief Joseph dated 1980. David Manuel (b. 1940) is an American artist known for his bronze figural pieces and for his public work projects. Manuel focused is art on the issues around the American expansion, showing in his works of Native Americans, pioneers, and cowboys. This bronze depicts Native American leader Chief Joseph as he holds up his rifle to drop. The statue shows excellent attention to detail and strikes an impressive figure. The piece is marked across the front reading "Chief Joseph "Hear Me My Chiefs" Manuel c 1980". The side of the piece is marked with "Fred Mitchell c 1980 50/50" and shows a "Maiden Bronze Foundry" stamp on the other side. This limited edition statue is marked on the back with part of Chief Joseph's famous speech, reading "I Am Tired, My Heart is sick and sad from where the Sun now stands, I will fight no more.". The piece is set onto a custom made hardwood base with a brown felt bottom. The statue shows good condition overall with little to no wear. The piece measures 25" tall with the base measuring 9" wide and 8 3/4" deep. David Manuel artwork has become increasingly collectible with a piece of similar size that sold for $22,000 at a May 2019 sale at Heritage Auctions.
