Union general (1833–1916). During Stoneman's 1863 Richmond Raid, Gregg commanded a division. The following month he was covering the extreme right of the Union line at Gettysburg, when he fought a sharp cavalry battle against J.E.B. Stuart's troopers, which secured for the Union army its last threatened artery. Gregg was cited in some accounts as having gained one of the most conspicuous cavalry victories of the war. Crisp and clear wet plate, albumen 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo. Superb quality half-view in uniform with rank of brigadier general. Backmark: E. & H.T. Anthony, New York, made from a photographic negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. In fine condition, with light rippling.
