No artist captured the thrill of the quick plunge, or leisurely submersion into the swimming pools of Los Angeles quite like David Hockney (Yorkshire, England, b. 1937). This particular piece features a painting of a backyard with reflecting pool with neatly trimmed grass. His depictions of the swimming pool began during his first trip to Los Angeles in 1964, and the resulting vibrant, almost abstract, planes of colour captured the clean lines, flat surfaces, and the openness of the natural environment of California Modernism. In his own words, Hockney would recalled later, "And as I flew over San Bernardino and saw the swimming pools and the houses and everything and the sun, I was more thrilled than I have ever been in arriving in any city" (http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20170210-the-bewitching-allure-of-hockneys-swimming-pools). This piece measures 10.5 inches x 28 inches; on verso is signed the artist's signature.
