Scottish astronomer (1843–1914) known for measuring astronomical distances, for astrophotography, and for geodesy; he famously photographed the Great Comet of 1882 while employed at the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. ALS signed “David Gill,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, May 10, 1910. Interesting letter containing a comprehensive list of astronomy references, naming several works by Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn, including "General theory of distribution of stars in space." Gill goes on to list a number of works on the following subjects: "Distance of Stars," "Solar Motion in Space," "Absorption of Light in Space," and "Star Streaming." In fine condition. Gill worked extensively with Kapteyn in conducting a photographic survey of southern hemisphere stars.
