<B>Madonna "Express Yourself" MTV VMA Award to David Fincher.</B></I> Before earning acclaim as director of such feature films as <I>Se7en,</B></I> <I>The Game,</B></I> <I>Fight Club,</B></I> <I>Panic Room,</B></I> and last year's <I>Zodiac,</B></I> David Fincher honed his considerable skills directing music videos for Rick Springfield, the Motels, Loverboy, Foreigner, Sting, Paula Abdul, and Madonna. Fincher directed four of the Material Girl's vids, with "Express Yourself" being the first. The concept combined Madonna's notorious flair for boundary-pushing eroticism with themes inspired by Fritz Lang's silent classic <I>Metropolis.</B></I> Since it's 1989 debut it has ranked #10 on both <I>Rolling Stone</B></I>'s "The 100 Top Music Videos" and MTV's "100 Greatest Videos Ever Made," as well as #1 on <I>Slant Magazine</B></I>'s "100 Greatest Music Videos" list. It also earned Fincher this MTV Video Music Award for Viewer's Choice Video. (He won again the following year for the "Vogue" video.)
