Manufacturer: Colt Model: Single Action Army
Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver manufactured in 1882 and subsequently restored in the 20th Century. The revolver has the early bulls-eye ejector rod head and cavalry style hammer with elongated bordered knurling on the spur. This revolver is stamped with the "D.F.C." mark of Ordnance Sub-Inspector David F. Clark on the underside of the barrel, bottom of the frame, side of the cylinder and lower right side and left heel of the grip. The final inspection mark of Lieutenant Charles C. Morrison ("CCM") is stamped on the lower left side of the grip. The date of inspection, "1882" is stamped above the "CCM" final inspection mark. "P" proofmarks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and the side of the cylinder. The "U.S." property mark is stamped on the left side of the frame. The barrel is roll-stamped with the legend "COLT'S PT. F.A, MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in elongated block letters. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three date/three line patent markings. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1092". The full serial number "74045" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "4045" is located on the barrel underneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. A "Z" Colt sub-inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well and "G" and "L" sub-inspection marks are stamped on the barrel behind the ejector housing stud. Most of the Single Action Cavalry Model revolvers were altered to "Artillery" configuration between 1896 and 1903. Original configuration Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolvers are scarce.
BBL: 7 1/2 In
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 74045
Condition:
Good as restored with recut, reengraved markings overall. The military blue and color casehardened finish has aged to a silver-gray patina. The frame, cylinder and ejector housing have light flash pitting. The surfaces of the barrel, trigger guard and back strap are smooth. The modern replacement barrel has the correct style legend, patent markings and serial numbers, military "D.F.C." sub-inspection marks, proofmarks and the "U.S." property marks are sharp. The one-piece walnut grip is smooth with moderate handling wear. The "1882" date and "DFC" and "CCM" inspection marks are crisp. The action is tight and functions properly. This is a good example of an unaltered Indian War, "D.F.C." sub-inspected, Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver.
