David F. Clark Sub-Inspected Colt Model 1873 Single Action Cavalry Revolver

This is an extremely fine example of a U.S. Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver that was inspected by Ordnance sub-inspector David F. Clark (D.F.C.) and Ordnance final inspector Capt. Frank Heath (FH) in 1885. The revolver has a military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The trigger and screws have a fire blue finish. The frame, hammer and loading gate are color casehardened and the one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The revolver has the second style, oval, ejector rod head adopted around serial number 113,000 and cavalry style hammer with elongated, bordered, checkering on the spur. The underside of the barrel beneath the ejector housing, bottom of the frame, side of the cylinder and bottom of the left grip heel are stamped with a small, block "D.F.C." Ordnance sub-inspection mark. A block "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. A block "G" is stamped below the serial number on the trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "4721" is stamped on the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. The full serial number, "114721" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match. The assembly number, "21" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Fourth Style, elongated block, address: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.-" in a single line. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt ''Three-Date/Three-Line'' patent marking followed by the "U.S" property mark. The left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1885" above the Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "FH" with an oval border. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the ordnance sub-inspection mark which consists of the script initials "DFC" in a rectangle. Single letter Colt sub-inspection marks are stamped in the hammer well, on the rear face of the cylinder and on the barrel underneath the ejector housing.

Extremely fine. The revolver is all original and retains at least 75% of the military blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel has most of the blue finish with some edge wear at the muzzle. The delicate, 'feathered' polishing marks are visible on either side of the front sight blade and above the ejector housing stud. The side of the ejector housing shows moderate holster wear; considerable blue finish remains in protected areas. The cylinder has strong blue in the flutes and a blue-gray patina on exposed surfaces. The blue finish on the bottom of the trigger guard bow, grip strap and back strap has moderate handling wear. The frame has most of the casehardened finish with strong case colors in protected areas; contact points on the recoil shield and loading gate have a silver patina. The hammer retains 60% plus of the casehardened finish. The trigger and screws have most of the fire blue finish. The surfaces of the barrel, frame and cylinder are smooth. The factory and Ordnance inspection marks are crisp. The grip is also in very fine condition with sharp date and final inspection mark on the left side and lighter sub-inspection marks on the right side. The grip retains about 75% of the original finish. Most of the wear is concentrated on the heels and right side of the grip. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is an exceptional original example of a hard-to-find, Indian War, Colt Single action Cavalry revolver.
