David F. Clark Inspected U.S. Colt Cavalry Model Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter

This is an example of a Colt Model 1873 Cavalry revolver that was manufactured in 1883 and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector David F. Clark. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line address "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." and the left side of the frame is stamped with the three line, three patent dates followed by "U.S.". The underside of the barrel is stamped with the letter "P" and "D.F.C." directly ahead of the cylinder pin. "D.F.C." is also stamped on the cylinder and bottom of the frame above the serial number. The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap, with the partial serial number "5632" marked on the bottom of the barrel under the ejector rod and on the cylinder. There is a small "G" stamped below the serial number on the trigger guard and back strap, and in the hammer slot above the hammer hole. Blade front and frame notch rear sights, and fitted with a smooth one-piece walnut grip. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, blue finish with barrel length and grips as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped in a shipment of 150 to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt plant on August 3, 1883. The remarks state that at that time standard issue was a 7 1/2 inch barrel and rubber grips.

Fair as refinished and the barrel has been stretched. The revolver has a smooth brownish gray patina. The grip is good with moderate wear on the lower edges, a small chip on the left toe and a couple of chips on the right toe. The grip has a pleasant hand rubbed patina. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
