Admiral (1813-1891) who helped improve the Navy as the superintendent of the US Naval Academy after significant service in the American Civil War. LS, three pages on two sheets, 4.5 x 6.75, personal letterhead, October 1, 1875. Letter to Gen. Joseph Roswell Hawley, who planned and ran the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. In part: "I received your note also the invitation from Mr. Welsh—& am very much disappointed in not being able to accept, but my wife is so unwell & has been so for a long time, that I don't like to leave her. I have no doubt but that you will all have a good time—I hope however to see you when the Centennial is in full blast." In fine condition.
