CROCKETT, David (1786-1836). Autograph free frank ("Free D. Crockett") on envelope of an addressed in Crockett's hand to "Messrs E. L. Cary & A. Hart Philadelphia Penn," 105 x 157mm., circular "City of Washington Dec 22, ." postmark. Cary & Hart were the publishers of Crockett's Narrative of the Life of David Crockett, which by 1834 had gone through several editions--though "to what degree the autobiographical writings...were his own cannot be said, but it is noteworthy that they bear little resemblance, either in substance or manner, to such of his letters as have come down to us." CROCKETT'S FREE FRANKS ARE VERY RARE; ABPC records only a two examples, sold in 1990 ($6,250). Christies 1999 ( $9,200). David "Davy" Crockett (August 17, 1786 – March 6, 1836) was a 19th-century American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier and politician. He is commonly referred to in popular culture by the epithet "King of the Wild Frontier".
