David Burnham Smith Glaze Test Wall Mask, Twenties Girl, Unique Piece
This detailed mask features the stylized face of a woman wearing a geometric and spiraled patterned headscarf, with defined facial features including large almond-shaped eyes, raised brows, and sculpted lips. One side of the head is adorned with a voluminous curled ceramic hair detail in a brown glaze. The headscarf is finished in a rich palette of deep blues, golden ochres, and turquoise, rendered in a detailed geometric pattern, bordered with blue and white striping. Inscribed on the reverse: "2 x 1270‚°C, 'Twenties Girl', Glaze Test" with the artist's initials and the year "DBS 1988." This inscription indicates the work was fired twice at 1270 degrees Celsius as part of a high-temperature glaze test. The reverse also has incised breathing holes and evidence of kiln residue, consistent with studio experimentation. An expressive and rare studio piece representative of Burnham Smith's' late 20th-century practice.
