David Ben-Gurion Autograph Letter Signed
David Ben-Gurion Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 6" x 8", Jerusalem, March 29, 1955. An excellent Ben-Gurion ALS evoking Moses Montefiore and settlements in Negev. Ben-Gurion was head of the provisional Israeli government during the 1948 war of independence. He later served as the first Prime Minister and returned to that office when problems erupted with the Arabs. He sanctioned the 1956 attack on Egypt and was responsible for the establishment of modern Israel. The letter is written on "The Government Center" letterhead, and is written in Hebrew in dark blue ink. A full translation reads: "6 Nisan, 715 29 March, 1955 Yosef Efrati Deputy Minister of Agriculture. Greetings, Prior to coming to Israel I read about the citrus plantations in Montefiore, and of Mikve-Yisrael and Petach-Tikva of Stempfer and Solomon; I envied them that they were privileged for something that no other Jew will merit - to be the first. When I arrived in Israel I realized that the first chapter did not end: au contraire, it almost did not begin - empty and desolate parcels of land are waiting to be redeemed by the new immigrants that are arriving. It is our obligation to increase the settlements in the Negev in order to strengthen our security." Very fine but for reinforcement of quarter-fold crease separations; two punch holes along border.
