David Ben-Gurion. Architect of the Stat
David Ben-Gurion. Architect of the State of Israel and its first Prime Minister. Outstanding personal A.L.S., Jan. 19, 1954, from Sdeh Boker, a few weeks after his resignation from office, and as a new member of this small, isolated kibbutz in the Negev desert. Addressed to the Police Officer in charge of Ben-Gurion's security who had given him an appealing dog, assuming it would ease stress. Blue ink, seventeen lines, in Hebrew, neatly written, with handsome signature. "My deepest thanks... Eldad is indeed the dog type I have always desired...Yet to my sorrow, I must return it...He barks at night ...and I am afraid its barks will disturb my wife's sleep...I had no idea that special guards were placed around my hut...I guess Eldad barks at the guards...I am sorry I have to be separated from Eldad. He is so cute and pretty...Its return does not detract from my gratitude...." Ben-Gurion returned to politics the following year as Minister of Defense, and later as Prime Minister. With a real-photo color postcard of his hut, English/Hebrew captioned. Exceedingly rare personal A.L.S. from a critical time in his life.
