Dave Sim - Original Art for Cerebus #1, page 19 (Aardvark-Vanaheim, 1977). With a humble beginning, writer and artist Dave Sim printed about 300 copies of Cerebus #1 and sold them at a few comic shops in the Toronto area. The people who picked up that first black-and-white issue were treated to a story that was a parody of the then-popular sword-and-sorcery genre, lampooning Conan, Barry Smith, and comics in general. Cerebus, the title character, was a greedy little aardvark pursuing a jewel that was guarded by a very incompetent sorcerer. Sim's creation soon became one of the most literate series in comics history, including such unlikely characters as Groucho Marx, Elric, Oscar Wilde, and Keith Richards in it's intricate and compelling storyline. Here is a rare treat indeed... a page from that original comic signed by Dave Sim himself. Overall page size is 10.5" x 15.5" with an image area of 10" x 15". This page is in great shape, and aside from some slight yellowing around the extreme corners is in excellent condition. Pages from Cerebus are very difficult to find in today's market, making this page from the very first issue a rare gem indeed!
