South Italy, Ca. 5th-4th Century BC. Jar has an interesting flat rim on top of the more traditional olpe shape. The body is decorated with brown and red horizontal lines, with the base being the natural tan of the jar and the neck being painted in a thick brown stripe. The top of the flat rim has two concentric circular brown lines and the handle has three parallel lines. 4 1/2"H x 5"W. This olpe is intact and in excellent condition with only minor surface and paint wear.

Provenance: Ex-Bryon Farwell Collection. Part of a 209 piece collection of ancient pottery featured in the book, "The Farwell Collection" published in 1953 by Franklin P. Johnson, University of Chicago art historian and archaeologist. Byron Farwell was a young Army captain stationed in Italy during WW II, and pieces presented in this book were personally excavated by him in 1944/45 in Ordonia, Italy.
