Darwin and his Circle 1871
Two leaves with 31 albumen photographs mounted upon them. Mostly portraits but some views of houses. The photographs of Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, and Archbishop Henry Edward Manning, are accompanied by an extract from their writings.
These leaves have been excised from an album compiled by J. H. Wolcott to commemorate a summer of travel with his brother and friends in 1871. Besides Darwin, Tennyson, Huxley, and Manning, he has chosen photographs of a number of other diverse and distinguished persons. Included are photographs of Queen Victoria, the Princess of Wales and her children, William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister, Robert Lowe, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Northcote, of the Joint High Commission, Edward Cardwell, Minister of War, Goschen, Lord of the Admiralty, Henry Austin Bruce, Home Secretary, Charles Kingsley, author, Holman Hunt, artist, Charles Edward Pollock, a member of the bar at Inner Temple, James Martineau, Unitarian divine, Norman McLeod, Scottish divine and chaplain to Queen Victoria, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, a popular preacher and a convinced Calvinist.
A portrait photo of Charles Dickens, who died in 1870, is placed next to a photograph of his flower-covered grave in Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey, marking the anniversary of his death. Other photographs of places include the "Coronation Chair" in the Chapel of Edward the Confessor, the "new" Albert Hall, Deepdene House and Abinger Rectory in Surrey.
