Darren Siwes develops new ways of interpreting ‘Aboriginal Art’ and is one of the most important Australian artists of indigenous origin

The present work is titled ‘Visions’ and belongs to the series ‘Misperceptions’ by Darren Siwes. It depicts a ghostly figure posing on a lawn in front of a chain-link fence. A well-lit radio-signal receiver is presented in the background on the left, while the opposite side is nearly lost in the darkness of the night and only reveals the sharp contrasts of a mass of dark green shrubbery. As demonstrated here, pictures by Darren Siwes often provide a political dimension and also seem to refer to his indigenous background. With this approach, the artist is related to other well-known Aboriginal artists such as Tracey Moffatt (b. 1960) and Gordon Bennett (1955-2014).

The photograph is laminated on an aluminium board and sealed with acrylic glass. It merely shows a number of faint scratches on the surface of the acrylic glass. The wooden frame is painted in black and is partly affected by handling and scratch marks. The sheet size is 100 x 120 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 118.8 x 138.5 cm.
