Dard Hunter's Papermaking By Hand in America (Chillicothe: Mountain House Press, 1950), Limited Signed First Edition (#12 of 210), folio, half linen with decorated paper cover boards, box covered in linen with leather spine. This is the greatest work of Dard Hunter and also the last book published by the Mountain House Press. Printed on handmade paper with a special typeface designed by Dard Hunter Jr. especially for this book. This is an exhaustive history of papermaking in America arranged chronologically by state from Pennsylvania (1691) through Tennessee (1811), concentrating on the first paper mill in that particular state. This was a "labor of love" for Hunter and his son. He gathered the material and then produced the book by hand over a period of years. There is a hand-colored frontispiece as well as 96 facsimiles, 27 reproductions of early American watermarks, and 42 reproductions of ream wrappers. A very fine copy in the original clamshell box, also in very fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
