Danzig Model GEW 98 Bolt Action Rifle with Zeiss Sighting System Extended Trench Magazine Dust Cov
This is an example of a Danzig GEW 98 rifle equipped with the unique Zeiss 2.5 power sighting system, extended 25 round magazine and dust cover. This sighting system was developed primarily for use in marginal light and is easily attached to any standard rear sight of the GEW 98. The system was accompanied by a folding luminous front sight which is absent on this rifle. The magazine greatly increased the cartridge capacity, however was extremely difficult to handle which made it unpopular with the German troops. The top of the receiver ring is marked "Crown / DANZIG / 1916", the right side is marked with crown over Gothic letter proofs and the left side is marked with the serial number and the Imperial eagle. The scope is marked with the Carl Zeiss logo in two places, "No4870" and "2.5x". Standard front and rear sights with the graduation markings on each side of the barrel below the rear sight. The blue magazine is equipped with the cut off attached by a chain and a dust cover has been installed on the bolt. Mounted with a one piece full length pistol grip stock with crown proof on the wrist and the serial number struck (5096) and arsenal restamped "44" to match. The bolt has had the numbers struck twice and then numbered 44 to match the receiver. Complete with slotted cleaning rod and Alex Cooper marked bayonet with serrated wooden handle and metal scabbard.
BBL: 29 1/2 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 8 mm Mauser

Serial Number: 44o
Condition: Very good as arsenal reworked. The barrel has a smooth plum patina, and the barrel bands and trigger guard have a smooth mottled brown patina. The magazine retains most of the arsenal black finish. The stock is good with scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The scope is very good with thinning finish. The rubber eye piece is absent and there is a crack and two chips in the objective end lens, otherwise the optics are slightly cloudy, but otherwise good. The bayonet and scabbard are both very fine. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
