Charge to Danl Webster".</B></I> Daniel Webster had represented New Hampshire (1813-1817) and Massachusetts (1823-1827) in the House of Representatives before being elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 1827. His brother Ezekiel died on April 10, 1829, a month before Webster signed this promissory note. Seven months later, in December, 1829, he married Caroline Le Roy, daughter of a wealthy merchant in New York; his first wife, Grace, had died in 1828. Webster served in the Senate from 1827-1841 when he became President W.H. Harrison's (and later Tyler's) Secretary of State (1841-1843). He returned to the Senate in 1845, serving until 1850 when he resigned to become Fillmore's Secretary of State, serving until his death in 1852. Blank corners have been removed with circular cuts. Stains mostly in blank areas. Matted with a 7" x 3.75" color reproduction of a painting depicting Webster speaking. Framed under glass to an overall size of 18.5" x 20.5".
