Confederate brigadier general (1810–1897) who commanded the 1st Division, 2nd Corps Army of the Mississippi and fought at Shiloh. ALS signed “D. Ruggles, Capt’n Infy,” one page, 7.75 x 8.5, November 23, 1847. Letter to Colonel John M. Geary. In part: “I have the honor in the act of changing my seat to reiterate before this body, my protest against the assignment of Capt. C. R. Gold of the 8th Infy. to a seat above me on this commission according to his Brevet rank, as an arbitrary act of power unknown to the laws of the U. States, and the established usage of the service, and to express my regret that the Commanding General while adhering to such a decision, has felt constrained to refuse my request to be excused from sitting as a member in accordance with it.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through first letter of the signature), and scattered discoloration and soiling.
