This work by Daniel Orantes, who died in 1977, depicts the face of Christ with his crown of thorns. Painted with black ink, his closed eyes and the ink that runs across his face illustrate the pain he had to suffer. The motif of the symmetrical face of Christ with long hair and chin-beard stands in the tradition of the so called Acheiropoieta, which means ‘not created by human hand’ and relates to the legend of the ‘Veil of Veronica’.



The sheet depicting the face of Christ is signed and dated lower right ‘Daniel Orantes. h. 71/.’. It is in a good condition, showing signs of age and wear, such as foxing and a small tear on the upper right corner, which is covered by the mat. The frame also shows traces of age and use. The sheet is matted and illegibly inscribed by hand on the back. There is an expertise by Julio Llort Gungulan, Santa Domingo, 2011. The sheet measures 54.5 x 37.3cm. The overall dimensions including the frame are 70 x 49.5 cm. (cru)
