Daniel Gran (Vienna 1649 - 1757 St. Pölten)
Daniel Gran (Vienna 1649 - 1757 St. Pölten) "Die Kriegswissenschaft", The Art of War , study for the ceiling fresco in the first vault of the Austrian National Library (former Imperial Library), oil on canvas, rounded sides, 48 x 87,5 cm, w/ frame (Wo)€ 35.000 - 45.000 US $ 34.650 - 44.550 During a study trip financed by Adam Franz Fürst von Schwarzenberg, Gran trained with Ricci in Venice and Solimena in Naples, as well as acquainting himself with Roman academic painting and the High Baroque. In 1723 he returned to Vienna and worked for the Schwarzenberg family until 1735, creating the frescoes in the Palais Schwarzenberg. His most important works were the frescoes for the court library, which gained him the appointment as court painter and his elevation to the ranks of nobility. According to Prof. Bushart the present painting is the "to date unknown modello for the ceiling fresco in the first vault of the so-called 'martial' wing of the great hall of the Imperial library, built by Johann Bernhard and Emanuel Fischer von Erlach'. The study shows only minor differenced from the fresco. A second, likewise very similar, sketch can be found at the Salzburg Residenzgalerie, though that version has been shortened (cut?) on both sides and is even closer to the final version than the painting at hand. The above work may therefore "be regarded as the earlier and complete version, which was presumably presented to the Emperor for his approval"(Prof. Bushart). Provenance: South German private collection. Expert's Report: Prof. Dr. Bruno Bushart, 28. July 2002; Dr. Eckhart Knab, 31. July 2002: "The study in oils shows the signature style of the master, whose warm and polychrome colour scheme, enamel, and atmospheric mood were praised by his contemporaries, and which later also inspired Maulbertsch." Dr. Knab compares the "studies soft and sensualist colours to the ceiling fresco at Schloß Eckartsau. Literature: Cf. Eckhart Knab, "Daniel Gran", monograph w/ catalogue of works, p.50 - 65, cat. p. 173,Ö9, ill 46. Professor Bushart intends to publish the present painting in the periodical "Weltkunst" in the near future.
