ALS signed “D. Sickles,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, no date. Letter to Ella Steele Brooks about her uncle, Frederick Steele. In part: "We expect to return to Madrid in less than a month. My mother & daughter are there. Of course I shall be ready at any time to contribute my recollections of your uncle Gen. Steele whenever you with them. Gen. Grant will do the same—he had I know very high regard for Genl. Steele both as an officer & a friend—Gen. Hooker is here at this Hotel—he also knew your Uncle. Gen. Salome also." In fine condition, with light corner stains to two pages.

Frederick Steele (1819–1868) was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War, serving in the 1st Division of Sherman's XV Corps during the Siege of Vicksburg. He was then promoted and placed in command of the Army of Arkansas, where he successfully captured Confederate-held Little Rock and continued to push Union boundaries south through the state.
