Daniel E. Sickles Autograph Letter Collection. This lot features 3 letters measuring 4.5" x 7", and one letter measuring 5" x 8". The letters are all written and signed by General Daniel Sickles, a Union Army general and American politician. Sickles was a colorful man, the first ever acquitted of murder by reasons of insanity. He shot and killed the son of Francis Scott Key, Philip Key, for having a blatantly public affair with his wife. Later, he defied orders at Gettysburg, and this resulted in a severe loss of his men and a crippling wound for himself. A cannonball struck his leg which had to be amputated that same day. Sickles donated the leg to the Army Medical Museum, and he reportedly visited the limb often. The letters in this lot contain routine content about traveling to Buffalo, New York for discussions of several speeches at a Grand Army of the Republic event. This colorful general is well represented in this interesting lot. <r The letters in this lot are in very fine condition on average; the usual folds are present, and all are laid down on a sturdy backing sheet; signatures are bold and dark. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
