Founding Father of the United States (1730-1796). He was a prominent member of one of America's great colonial families that included his cousin Charles Carroll of Carrollton who signed the Declaration of Independence, and his brother John Carroll who was the first Catholic bishop in the United States. He was one of only five men to sign both the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution of the United States. Printed 4 x 2 lottery ticket, circa early 1790s, completed in manuscript. An early American lottery ticket issued to help fund the Washington City Canal "for cutting the Canal through the City of Washington to the Eastern-Branch Harbour." Numbered in manuscript and signed at the bottom by Daniel Carroll. Irregular edges, a few tiny holes, mild toning and soiling (heavier along the top edge), otherwise fine condition. Carroll was Commissioner of the District of Columbia after serving as a delegate to the Continental Congress and signing the Articles of Confederation in 1781. George Washington, a friend of Carroll, appointed him one of three commissioners to survey and limit a part of Washington D.C. Carroll served as Commissioner until 1795, when his age and poor health caused him to resign. Thus, the ticket can be dated no later than 1795.
