Union general (1831–1901) who saw action at Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, as well as nearly all the engagements of the Peninsula Campaign and Sherman’s March to the Sea. He is generally credited as the composer of the bugle call “Taps.” LS, one page, lightly-lined, 7.25 x 9.25, Headquarters General Recruiting Office letterhead, April 27, 1867. Letter to James Sheldon. In part: “Your favor is at hand & I have complied with your request by this day forwarding the correspondence with a commendatory letter to the Dept. Commander Geo. H. Thomas. Your protege should apply for her remission to be examined with a view to his promotion.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a bit of mild toning.
