Cyrus Dallin was among the first American sculptors to recognize the plight of
the Indian and to devote his life and art to creating heroic monuments that
heralded the Indian viewpoint. Dallin first met the Crow Indian Pretty Eagle
in 1879, on a train bound for Boston while the young sculptor was on his way to
study with Truman Bartlett. The stature and character of Pretty Eagle made a
lasting impression on the artist, and years later he captured his image in
bronze.

The sculpture of Pretty Eagle was originally cast by Dallin in 1926-1927. To
meet the increasing demand for the artist's work, a re-issue in an edition of
twenty-one was created in 1984, cast from a mold of the original sculpture.-KK
