Dallas, Texas U.C.V. and Sons C.V. Memorabilia
Dallas, Texas U.C.V. and Sons C.V. Memorabilia Circa 1902. The United Confederate Veterans was formed in 1889 as a veteran's association for former Confederate soldiers in the American Civil War, similar in purpose and scope to the Grand Army of the Republic group for Union soldiers. The UCV organized many local and national reunions of Confederate veterans, often in conjunction with GAR reunions. Medals and ribbons were often produced as souvenirs of these gatherings and we offer collectors two fine Dallas-related items. The medal (1.25" x 2.375") was produced for the UCV reunion held in Dallas in 1902 and is a particularly attractive one with both the American and Confederate flags pictured in colored enamel. The condition is excellent, the only flaw being that the pin has come unsoldered at the top; it is still present though and easily repaired.

The ribbon, 2" x 4.5" in size, was issued, possibly at the same time, by the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, a fraternal organization organized under the auspices of the UCV in 1896 for male descendants of soldiers who fought honorably for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and which is still active today. This silk ribbon is in near-excellent condition and states in red "W. L. Cabell Camp, No. 49. Sons C.V. Dallas, Texas." This is the name of the Dallas camp or chapter to this day. General William Lewis Cabell was a brigadier general in the CSA and later served as the mayor of Dallas for three non-consecutive terms in the 1870s and 1880s.
