A thin layer of snow covers the Texas Panhandle. Photograph measures 9 3/4”x8”, beige single matte—suffers from aging and the two right corners are missing 14”x11”, high to medium contrast—tends toward the grays, and the focus is good. Store front sign, The Panhandle Hardware Company, can be easily read, but very slightly blurred. Photographer identified as Dixon’s Studio of Dalhart, Texas. Dalhart is located on the Northwest corner of the Texas Panhandle. Dalhart is sometimes referred to, by Texans, as the gateway to the Rockies. A ranching community, XIT Ranch being the most famous, got its start in 1901. The community quickly developed after the arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway. By 1912, the population reached 3,500 and had two railroads. The city is the county seat of Dallam County, but also straddles the county line with Hartley County, hence the same Dalhart.
