It has some wear and measures 10.75” x 8.5” cancelled. The Dakota Central Telephone Company started in 1898 in Aberdeen. The story of the company began when the German born John L.W. Zietlow lost his arm in a sawmill accident. While recovering from the accident, the owners of sawmill paid for Zietlow to take a 6 month course at a local business college. Soon after completing the course, Zietlow was hired back by the sawmill, this time in a managerial position. Later, Zietlow found work at Northwestern Manufacturing & Car Company. It was there that Zietlow became friends with a young electrician named Charles Emner. Emner later convinced Zietlow to invest in the emerging telephone business, thus the Dakota Central Telephone Company was born! Newspaper editor Casper Yost once said that Zietlow was “one of the best telephone men in the nation.” The company was bought out in 1928 by Tri-State Telephone [REF: http://www.telcomhistory.org/vm/historiesDakota.shtml].
