Lot of two. 1) Incorporated in South Dakota, 1901. Issued to V.T. McGillycuddy June 5, 1901 for 100 shares. Valentine McGillicuddy is known to have a been a physician and also Pine Ridge's Indian Agent. He is noted to have had a tumultuous relationship with Red Cloud, often being perceived as somewhat crooked by those he did business with. He is also known to have nursed a stab wound of Crazy Horse before being tossed out of office in 1886. This certificate is of a later period of McGillicuddy's life. 6 small vignettes of miners in various poses at center edges (l and r) and corners (4). Central vignette of river through mountains with train and mill. Signed by Jacob Moons, Secr. And Thomas Surrey (?) President. Charter received by the S. Dakota Secr. of State May 14, 1901 (Office of S. Dakota Secr. of State, 1902). This cert. issued just a couple weeks after incorporation. Unsigned. Fine. 10.25" x 8.25".

2) Cert. No. 140 issued to Seth Bullock for 100 shares. Deadwood, SD Sheriff Seth Bullock, after an early alliance with then Deputy Sheriff of Medora, ND Theodore Roosevelt, was called by the latter "… a true Westerner, the finest type of frontiersman" (Doran, 347). Known for his fearlessness, Bullock tamed the rather rowdy camp of Deadwood, sending one man to his death by hanging in front of a disgruntled mob. Bullock held off the mob with only a shotgun. Soon after becoming Deadwood's first sheriff , he is noted to have dissuaded Dodge City Deputy Marshall Wyatt Earp from staying in the Deadwood area. Unsigned. Fine. Vignettes as above. 10.25" x 8.25"
