Measures 15.5 by 20.5.” Two photo cards mounted in a wood frame under glass. The photo cards measure 9.5 by 6.5.” Both were photographed by J. C. H. Grabill, who worked in Colorado, Wyoming, and the Dakotas in the late 1800s. He is most well known for his photos of the aftermath of the Battle of Wounded Knee, which took place in December of 1890. Grabill photographed in South Dakota from 1875 to 1891. The top photo is of covered wagons. It is Grabill’s number 476, titled “Freighting in the Black Hills.” The photograph was taken between Sturgis and Deadwood in 1887. This photo has three foxing spots but is very sharp and has good contrast. The second photo card is of a hitched stage coach with six white horses, two drivers, and a load full of passengers. The title is “Black Hills Treasure Coach” which Grabill described as “the last coach photographed while going at full speed down gulch near old toll gate between Deadwood and Sturgis.” Grabill copyrighted this photo in both 1887 and 1888. The shot is very clear and well focused. In the upper left quadrant of this photo, a small portion of the photo has been ripped off.
