Daguerreotypes of the Mayor of Denver, Colorado,<p>William M. Clayton (1824-1892), lot of 4. Includes an exceptional, close-up half plate daguerreotype signed "Collins, Artist" with penciled note penned to pad "Wm. M. Clayton taken in Phila 1853"; an anonymous, quarter plate daguerreotype, housed in a geometric union case, of Clayton in a top hat; an oval 4.5 x 3.75" daguerreotype in an oval frame and housed in silk-lined 7 x 6 x 1.5" leather case, and a later cdv of Clayton by "Draper and Husted" of Philadelphia. Clayton emigrated to Denver, Colorado in 1860, where he joined his brother George in business. During the Civil War, their firm supplied much materiel to Colorado troops. Clayton made his mark in real estate, however, and owned much property in Denver. He was elected Mayor of Denver in 1868.<p>Half plate with cover glass that should be cleaned. Oval image with tarnish ring, and scattered stains, quarter plate fine, with one "chigger" on cheek.
