Daguerreotype of New Orleans Militia Member,
Daguerreotype of New Orleans Militia Member,
anonymous sixth plate from the Zacharie family archive, Not so identified, but possibly H. H. Zacharie, later a Major in the Confederate Army (see lot 197). A fine portrait of an enlisted soldier wearing a Mexican War era uniform. The only distinctive markings are the five-pointed star(s) on the collar and the unusual stars used in lieu of buttons holding the leather strap of the M1839 forage cap. The details of the buttons are not in focus. Louisiana raised the equivalent of six volunteer regiments for service in Mexico but we are unable to confirm H.H. Zacharie’s participation as he was not an officer and the Louisiana enlisted rosters for the period are not accessible. Delicately tinted, and housed in a complete compsition case.
Traces of original seals remain, light tarnish ring.
