1/2 plate in full case with repaired spine. Here we see Broadbent's use of his landscape backdrop to good effect. The children are positioned in the space between the trees. The blurriness of the trees, to suggest distance, is a convention that derives from an artifact of the photographic lens, and shows that this convention would be expected to be understood by the viewer. What I mean is that there wouldn't have been, in a painting from an earlier period, such a contrast between crisp foreground and blurry background. The arc of the hoop relates nicely to the oval mat. "S. Broadbent" stamped in the mat.
