Confederate general and military author and historian (1822–1900) who fought at Corinth, Vicksburg, and Mobile. Two items: ALS signed “Dabney H. Maury,” one page, 8 x 5, lined sheet, April 10, 1877. Letter to J. William Jones regarding the Southern Historical Society, which was founded by Maury, and membership payments. NY: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1894. Hardcover, 5.75 x 8.25, 279 pages. Signed and inscribed in ink on interior page by Union General Rush C. Hawkins, “A very charming personal account by a Southern Gentleman of the ‘old school.’ I knew many like him sixty years ago. But alas now, I might search our whole country over, in vain, for another like him. We have become a nation of hustling and real gentleman don’t count. RCH.
