This is a representative example of a Model 1902 American Eagle variation with the 4" "Fat Barrel". This model was the first Luger chambered in the 9mm caliber and was fitted with the very distinctive "Fat Barrel", which is noticeably less sleek when compared to the 7.65 mm barrel. These pistols were manufactured for sales in the United States. These pistols fell into two serial number groups, 22300-22400 and 22900-23500, with this particular pistol falling into the second group. Approximately 600-700 of these rare pistols were manufactured. The pistol has the recessed breech block, early dished toggle knobs with the toggle lock on the right side, correct unmarked extractor, both thumb and grip safeties with the thumb safety operating in the up position and the lower position polished. The top of the chamber is marked with the American Eagle, The toggle has the "DWM" monogram, the left side of the barrel extension is marked with a "Crown/B" and "Crown/U" proof mark, and the front of the frame is marked with the serial number over "GERMANY". The underside of the barrel is marked with the crown "B","U", and "G" proofs and "118,35" over the matching serial number. The left side of the breech block is marked with a "Crown/U" proof and the left side of the front toggle is marked with a crown "B" and "U" proof mark. The back of the rear toggle is marked with the partial serial number "89". Blade front and "V" notch fixed rear sight. The pistol is finished in high quality rust blue, with straw colored small parts, the magazine is the correct nickel with correctly un-numbered wooden base and the pistol is fitted with checkered walnut grips.
BBL: 4 3/4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm parabellum
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 23089
Condition: Very good as partially refinished, (the side plate and barrel). The pistol retains 50% of the original faded blue finish on the balance, with some, high edge wear, some thinning on the left side of the frame and on the grip straps, as well as some minor spotting on the grip straps and grip safety. The modern replacement remarked barrel retains most of the professionally applied blue finish with some wear on the sides of the muzzle. There are a few dings on the left side rail. The small parts show traces of original straw color, mostly in protected areas, with a smooth silver gray patina on the balance. The grips are fine with a few minor dings and dents, some minor wear and crisp checkering. Clear markings. Mechanically excellent.
