He was a landscape painter, muralist, graphic artist, architectural modeler, sculptor, interior decorator, teacher, cartographer, and painting restorer.

In 1918, Holmes enrolled at Texas Christian University. A student with much promise, he became an assistant instructor even before his graduation in 1923. From 1925 to 1935, Holmes worked creating architectural moldings and reliefs for the Southern Plastic Relief Company. His architectural decorations adorn buildings all over the south and southwest. In 1929, he received a commission to paint the murals at the Jockey Club at the Arlington Downs horse track.

Dwight Holmes moved his home and studio to San Angelo. Its central location enabled him convenient access to the areas he loved to paint - Abilene, Big Bend, Fort Davis, New Mexico, Colorado, the Texas Hill Country, and East Texas. He painted these areas for over sixty years and left behind a large legacy of the Texas landscape.

This large painting, dated 1948, is an excellent example of Holmes' finer work.Condition Report: Relined.
