DURRANI: Mahmud Shah, in Herat, 1801-1829, AV mohur (10.92g), Herat, AH1218//1218, A-V3138, KM-399, bold strike, standard type, used at Herat from 1216 until 1239, very common for silver, but extremely rare for gold, EF, RRR. Herat mint gold for Mahmud Shah was unknown to R.B. Whitehead in 1934, but a few examples have surfaces since then, at first an example dated AH1218 (the only date recorded by KM), more recently examples dated AH1216 and 1217. The mohur dated 1217 sold at our Auction 14, Lot 821, for $1500, and the examples dated 1216 and 1218 sold at Spink Auction 12027, Lots 599 & 600, for $1610 each.
