[DU BOIS ( Dorothea) , Lady]. Poems on Several Occasions. By a Lady of Quality. Dublin : Printed for the Author, and sold by the Booksellers, 1764FIRST EDITION, pages xxii, (2, errata leaf), 159, (1, blank), with the 12-page subscriber list, 8vo, full sprinkled and panelled calf antique, spine and inside borders gilt, by Dulau : title and last leaf very slightly dusty : a large and handsome copy, with the Esher bookplate. Du Bois (1728–74), poet, novelist, playwright, born in Dublin, eldest of seven daughters of Richard Annesley. This was her first book, with the first and longest poem, “A True Tale,” telling the her own story of her family’s treatment by her philandering father, the Earl of Anglesey. The Earl took a second wife, turning Lady Dorothea, her mother and sisters out of the house without a farthing. When news came that he lay dying, Lady Dorothea determined to visit him, “to gain his Blessing, ere he quits this Life.” Instead “The cruel Father imprecating lay, / Disowning Nature, order’d her away. . . / His base-born Son, a Pistol e’en presents, / Behind her Head, but watchful Heav’n prevents / The Fiend from executing his Intents.” As The Feminist Companion to Literature in English remarks, other poems in this volume “comment on women’s writing and martial spirit,” and its verse preface wittily catches the dilemma of her publishing the work by subscription : “Too long you’ve waited, gentle Reader, / But my dull Pate’s a sorry Breeder ; / And I must own, ’tis with Affliction / That I have publish’d by Subscription.” Although well-represented in ESTC, with sixteen locations, this is a most uncommon book in commerce.ENGLISH PRE 1801; DUBLIN PRINTED; ENGLISH LITERATURE; VERSE; WOMEN WRITERS; ; ; ; ; ; ;
