DOWITCHER SHOREBIRD.
North Carolina, late 19th century, wood. Root-head dowitcher shorebird in original paint with original bill. Early crack on right side is filled with wax/pitch. On iron stand. 9"l.
Similar examples can be found in American Bird Decoys by William J. Mackey, Jr. on page 176. Ex Ted Harmon,(Massachusetts).
Condition: Very few shorebird decoys were made in North Carolina so it's rare when one turns up. When hunters did go after shorebirds they preferred dowitchers because of the taste. The dowitcher shorebird decoys were made in a primitive way with root heads like this example. Most were made with iron sticks (see Mackey's book).
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports.
