[DOUXMENIL ( )]. The memoirs of Ninon de l'Enclos : with her letters to Monsr. De St. Evremond, and to the Marquis de Sevigne. Collected and translated from the French, by Mrs. Griffith. In two volumes. Dublin : Printed for J. Beatty, No. 32, Skinner-Row, 1778Pages (2), xiii, (1, blank), 296, with the half-title, 2 parts in 1 vol, with separate title-pages and continuous signatures and pagination, 12mo, contemporary calf, gilt bordered sides, fully gilt and lettered spine : an attractive copy, pleasantly bound. This second Dublin printing, a resetting, not a reprint, with translator's name acknowledged on the title-page, is somewhat more scarce with ESTC locating eight copies : L(2), D, Dt / CU-BANC, PU, CaBViV and CtY. The letters to de Sevigné are spurious ones attributed to Louis Damours. She believed that translators had a right to comment on the texts they translated, so her translations characteristically contain interpolated, even on occasion feminist, commentary. Despite her English literary persona as a champion of sentimental virtue, she translated some French libertine texts, notably The Memoirs of Ninon de L'Enclos and Claude Joseph Dorat's The Fatal Effects of Inconstancy (Brandeis Univ).ENGLISH PRE 1801; DUBLIN PRINTED; WOMEN WRITERS; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
